About the art:
The top-view of the barrel cactus is visually the most interesting part of this plant, and I also enjoy working with a radial, symmetric composition whenever possible. The distinct visual elements and unique characteristics of the barrel cactus inspired my imagination and creativity. I started with a simple pencil drawing and made use of lines and curves and worked the composition in an orderly and geometric fashion. When the pencil drawing is established I work right over it with acrylic paint. Most of the details of this painting were accomplished with a short handle #2 round watercolor brush.
The barrel cactus is a species that is native to the Sonoran Desert region. They heavily populate the desert wilderness and I often observe them while hiking around the region. They are also present in the residential landscapes around my neighborhood in Phoenix, AZ. The barrel cactus is an ongoing theme that I often visit in my artwork and I have created several variations of this composition. See more from my Desert Garden Collection.
