About the art:
Cactus flowers represent warmth and protection. They are symbolic of maternal love and the ability to survive and prosper in a harsh and unforgiving environment.
I chose the top-view of the barrel cactus because it is interesting to me and I enjoy working with a radial, symmetric composition whenever possible. I started with a simple pencil drawing and made use of lines and curves while I worked the composition in an systematic and geometric fashion. When the pencil sketch was established I worked over it with acrylic paint. Most of the details of this painting were accomplished with a short handle mini round watercolor brushes.
The barrel cactus is native to the Sonoran Desert region. They heavily populate the desert wilderness and are a popular choice in residential landscapes. The barrel cactus is an ongoing theme that I often visit in my artwork and I have created several variations of this composition. See more in the Original Paintings section of my shop.
