The spiritual or symbolic meaning of cactus (to survive and thrive) is embodied in its unique physical characteristics that enable it to prosper in a harsh and unforgiving environment.

About the art:
The barrel cactus is a species that is native to the Sonoran Desert region. They heavily populate the desert wilderness and I often observe them while hiking around the region and also in many residential landscapes around my neighborhood. The barrel cactus is an ongoing theme that I often visit in my artwork and I have created several variations of this composition.
For my composition I chose the top-view of the barrel cactus because it is visually interesting and I enjoy working with a radial, symmetric composition whenever possible. The distinct visual elements and unique characteristics of the barrel cactus inspired my imagination and creativity. I enjoy working in a geometric fashion using lines and curves to describe the subject and the barrel cactus provides many of those elements.
The subdued green-grey background of this painting balances perfectly with the rich dark venetian red hue of the cactus body to create to create a warm and earthy feel. For the finishing touch I added the golden flowers and fruits that often adorn the crown of barrel cactus.
