About the art:
Barrel cactus #13
The spiritual meaning behind the cactus is symbolized in its unique body structure and physical characteristics that it allow it to survive and thrive in harsh conditions. Some ancient cultures believe that the cactus represents maternal love because of their ability to survive in harsh conditions.
The barrel cactus is a species that is native to the Sonoran Desert region. They heavily populate the desert wilderness and I often observe them while hiking around the region and in the residential landscapes around my neighborhood in Phoenix, AZ. The distinct visual elements and unique characteristics of a barrel cactus inspired my imagination and provided a great opportunity for me to work with lines and curves. The "Barrel cactus" is an ongoing theme that I often visit in my artwork and I have created several variations of barrel cacti that are similar in composition.
