About the art:
The spiritual or symbolic meaning of cactus (to survive and thrive) is embodied in its unique physical characteristics that have enabled it to prosper in a harsh and unforgiving environment.
The barrel cactus is a species that is native to the Sonoran Desert region. They heavily populate the desert wilderness and I often observe them while hiking around the region and also in residential landscapes around my neighborhood. The barrel cactus is an ongoing theme that I often visit in my artwork and I have created several variations of this composition.
The distinct visual elements and unique characteristics of a barrel cactus provide a great opportunity for me to work with lines and curves. The composition is roughly sketched onto the canvas with pencil and then painted over with acrylic paint. Most of the details of this painting were accomplished with a short handle #2 round watercolor brush. I used a limited palette of custom mixed colors as well as a pure venetian red paint that provided a warm and earthy background. The venetian red is also nice complement to the subdued green-grey hue of the cactus body and creates a great contrast for the brilliant lighter colored cactus needles. The finishing touch are the golden flowers and fruits that often adorn the crown of the barrel cactus.
