Cactus flowers represent warmth and protection and are symbolic of maternal love as well as the ability to survive and prosper in a harsh and unforgiving environment.
The scarlet hedgehog cactus is a species native to the Sonoran Desert region as well as a personal favorite. I painted my first "Scarlet" hedgehog in 2014 and have since made several variations of this theme. "Scarlet" is an ongoing theme that I occasionally revisit in my studio. Each painting in this series varies in composition, palette and size.
