A cactus represents warmth and protection and is symbolic of maternal love as well as the ability to survive and prosper in a harsh and unforgiving environment.
Jumping cholla cacti populate that Sonoran Desert Region and I often observe them while hiking in the desert wilderness. Although quite beautiful from a distance you definitely don't want to get too close to these hearty desert dwellers. My artistic interpretation of this unique species focuses mainly on the visual elements of line and curve as well as their segmented body structure. I used a simple palette comprised of my own custom mixed colors to create a warm earthy feel.
The jumping cholla is an ongoing theme that I often revisit in my studio. Each interpretation of "Cholla" varies by composition, color scheme and size. See more paintings like this in my Desert Garden Collection of paintings. ~ Sue Dranchak
